For students who are looking for an academic after-school activity, the Cape Coral High School Math Team is an amazing opportunity. The math team is run by Chase Lieberenz and takes place in room 272 every Tuesday. Students who want to participate must complete the geometry course with a passing grade.
The club is new this school year. President of the math team and sophomore Sean O’Donnell stated, “The club is very recent so we are working on starting back up again.”
Students who are worried about the math team being too difficult, don’t. Hard work is always required but according to sophomore Antonella Martin, who is part of the math team, there are three different sections depending on each student’s level of math.
The first section is called Mu which is the most difficult level and includes calculus. Alpha is the second section and contains pre-calculus and algebra 2 math levels. The third section is called Theta which includes algebra and geometry.
Students join the math team for multiple reasons. “I joined the math team because math is one of my favorite subjects,” said Martin.
Sophomore Samantha Ortega-Millan stated, “I joined the math team because I want to pursue the career of being an engineer.”
O’Donnell added, “I joined the math team because it lets you collaborate with others on the type of math that interests you the most.”
The math team presents new opportunities to all who are interested. “I personally do enjoy the math team, I think it’s a very nice club especially since I already have previous experience with math competitions,” said Martin. “All of the people in the club are nice, funny, and actually enjoy being there which we are thankful for because it allows our club to have a nice and friendly environment.”
“I enjoy how members get to choose topics that interest them, rather than a structured course,” stated O’Donnell.
Ortega-Millan added, “I enjoy coming to a friendly learning environment and being able to collaborate with the people around me.”
The math team has big plans for the future. “We plan to compete this quarter, where we can represent our school in solo and team rounds,” said O’Donnell. “We are hoping to see if we can go to the regional competition which is around May in Orlando,” added Martin.
The people in the club have already shown benefits from it. “We help each other improve in our sub-topics which are specific sections of math that we want to compete in,” stated Martin.
Ortega-Millan said, “I believe that the math team will help me with getting into college and succeeding in college while also helping my career overall in the future.”
Speaking of graduating and college, the math team is an honor society club. This means when students graduate from high school they get to wear a cord for the math team with their cap and gown.
Students who are interested in joining the math team make sure to stop by room 272 on Tuesday.
