The latest episodes of Cobra Kai have been an enormous letdown this year. As usual, the cringe-worthy scenes combined with dull acting and a second-rate plot failed to deliver a good season finale.
Following the death of Kwon Jae-Sung (Brandon H. Lee) at the Sekai Taikai, a notoriously known karate tournament celebrated for featuring the best dojos worldwide, many involved were left feeling disheartened. The doubts concerning whether or not the tournament could continue, the tournament host Gunther Braun, played by Carsten Norgaard, proposed a way to continue with the tournament.
Despite the new opportunity, Sensei Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Maccio) felt disheartened with karate and believed his life was better without it. However, a visit from his rival, Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffin), made a shift in LaRusso’s perspective.
In the girls’ final tournament, Cabra Kai’s Tory Nichols (Peyton List) triumphed over the Iron Dragon’s Zara Malik, portrayed by Rayna Vallandingham. Nevertheless, due to the scoring system based on “dojo” points, the Iron Dragons maintained the lead.
In the boys’ division, Cobra Kai’s Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña) beat Axel Kovačević (Patrick Luwis) from the Dragons, resulting in a tie between the two dojos. As a result, the senseis from both dojos had to face off in a match. During the first half, Lawrence struggled, but after an overly familiar “Cobra Kai Never Dies” pep talk from LaRusso, he rallied and won the fight
One of the biggest disappointments in season six, part three, was the lack of meaningful character development for important characters like Kenny Payne (Dallas Dupree Young), and Devon Lee (Oona O’Brien). Initially introduced in season four with significant hype surrounding them, their arcs were abruptly stopped in later seasons, leaving them with minimal screen time and no closure.
While viewers caught glimpses of Kenny and Devon’s potential during their matches at the Sekai Taikai, it ultimately did not fulfill the expectations set during their introductions.
Another major letdown was the decline in the show’s overall plot quality. In the early seasons of the show, the central focus revolved around Johnny Lawrence, Miguel Diaz, and Cobra Kai. However, later seasons, especially season six, shifted the emphasis too heavily towards Miyagi-Do.
Part of what made the show great was the raw brutality and mentality that Cobra Kai carried. When Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do merged into one dojo, it felt as if Miyagi-Do became the primary focus of the show, which many fans did not want, as it overshadowed what the original Karate Kid movies represented.
Overall, season six of Cabra Kai was disappointing and the series deserved a more fitting ending. While there were some redeeming moments in the new seasons, especially in part three, it failed to meet the expectations fans had for a thrilling finale.
