As the release of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines 2 approaches, the gaming community and fans of the original Warhammer wait impatiently. The sequel to the 2011 classic, developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, will bring back the brutal combat that made it a fan favorite game.
The game’s core aspects are blended with a mix of third-person shooter and hack and slash, allowing players to switch play styles to whichever they find comfortable. One aspect of the game that pulls players in is the savage, merciless, and chaotic carnage. The satisfaction of mowing through swarms of “tyranids,” grotesque bug-like creatures, is similar to that of games like Doom Eternal and Helldivers 2.
Although Space Marines 2 may seem to be a game that is full of mutilation, surprisingly there is much more to it. The developers have taken inspiration from other big titles, incorporating timing-based combos and parries into the combat. This makes it so that the game is more difficult but also rewarding at the same time.
Focusing on the story, Space Marines 2 continues a century after the events of the first game, along with the return of Captain Titus. Although, currently the only enemy faction revealed are the tyranids, the plot teases the return of old enemies like the Thousand Sons Chaos Marines, and the mysterious disappearance of Captain Titus.
This is also a great opportunity for the game to show the lore, diverse enemies, and galaxy-wide conflicts of the Warhammer universe.
In addition to the 12-hour long campaign, Space Marines 2 offers its unique multiplayer features. The game offers a 12-player versus mode as well as a co-op mode, allowing players to team up for an endless amount of Player versus Environment missions all while also offering players the opportunity to experience the world of Warhammer.
The inclusion of multiplayer modes enables players to increase the duration of the game, all while giving different experiences from the campaign. Players would surely be content with having hours of hacking their way through hordes of enemies or simply learning about the Warhammer universe.
As the game promises intense and diverse combat, a rich story, and options that expand the Warhammer universe, it is evident that there is a ton of excitement for Space Marines 2. It’s everything a fan of the series could ask for.
