Davian Torres, a motivated and versatile student-athlete at Cape Coral High School. His high school career is characterized by drive, leadership, and determination. Torres, a senior at Cape High, is not just an athlete; he is a coach, a student leader, and has a clear-cut vision for his future.
Born on March 2, 2007, Torres has lived his entire life in Florida. He grew up in Cape Coral, moving from Cape Elementary School, up to Caloosahatchee Middle School, and now nearing graduation from Cape High School. Even from a young age, he showed curiosity, competitiveness, and a passion for learning.
During his high school career, Torres engrossed himself in athletics. He played football and participated in weightlifting and track and field, most notably throwing the javelin. What makes him stand out as a student as well as an athlete is his undeterred determination. Throughout his athletic career, Torres has suffered various injuries including a fractured left wrist, both wrists continuously sprained, an AC joint separation in the shoulder, and a clavicle chip.
Every injury of his presented its challenges. Recovery, as we all know, is not only physical, but also mental. While his peers might have viewed these setbacks as an excuse to quit, Torres used them as a means of becoming stronger. He stated, “They made me want to recover from the injury, but not just that, I wanted to make sure that I was stronger so I wouldn’t be put in a position like that again.” His constant dedication and commitment to himself and those around him are proof of how much he cares about the betterment of others in his circle.
This constant uplifting and positive attitude has also made Davian a leader of his peers. Competing in multiple sports, he gained a coaching position for the girls’ weightlifting team. Using that experience as a coach, he discovered how to support and uplift others. Supporting others in their endeavors and attaining their goals also shaped his respect for the discipline that comes with balancing both sports and life.
His leadership not only reflected in sports, but in school as well. Torres is a Student-at-Large for Cape High’s student government, giving him a platform in which he can speak for student opinion and give input on decision-making in the club. His constant involvement shows his sense of responsibility and willingness to put others first and advocate on their behalf.
Torres grants credence to what he has achieved to the great guidance and mentoring he’s had throughout his athletic and scholastic career. His football coach, Jaylen Watkins, has been a constant pillar of support. There have been others who have filled important roles as well. Head football coach at Lehigh Senior High School, Coach Duke, and weightlifting coach Coach Coby. Both played a large role in toughening him as a person and teaching him discipline for how to play with heart in his sport. Not only did these leaders help make him a better competitor, but they also allowed him to become his own better leader.
While a majority of high school athletes often seek out college scholarships as a means of extending their sports careers, Davian has decided to take another path, one similar to that of his father. Rather than take his athletic career to the next level, Davian will attend trade school to study HVAC and Refrigeration, a profession that offers highly sought-after technical labor and promising career opportunities. He is also planning on receiving a business degree from Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW) with the ultimate goal of one day owning his own HVAC company.
Apart from school and sports, Torres pursues his artistic outlets as well. As a passionate photographer, Torres uses the camera as a tool to communicate and interact with other individuals. It’s another source of inspiration and motivation through life for him athletically, creatively, and personally.
Aside from athletics and photography, Torres spends his spare time working out as a means to clear his mind, continue to stay motivated, and remain disciplined. Regardless of whether he is at the gym, on the field, or behind the camera, his mindset remains the same: continue to grow.
Davian Torres is a perfect example of what it means to seize the moment. He has struggled, made important choices about his life, and taken every opportunity possible to both lead and serve others. He radiates positivity, reflecting in his character as an athlete as well as a student.
As he prepares for graduation and beginning to start the next chapter, Torres is prepared, humble, and motivated. Whether he creates an enterprise, works on core values as a team member, or captures life through his camera, he does it with empathy and perseverance. His path has just begun, yet already people are talking of his future to come.
