The 2023 Grammy Awards will go down in the books as one of the best
On February 5th, the 65th annual Grammy Awards took place. The prestigious music award event began back in 1959, and has continued to this day as a favorite event for millions of viewers to watch, their favorite celebrities competing for awards each year.
This year, the Grammy’s were incredibly special, as the first transgender artist won best pop duo. Artist Kim Petras, a trans woman, won the best pop duo category after being featured in artist Sam Smith’s song “Unholy.” Smith allowed Petras to accept the award as she was the first ever trans artist to win a Grammy. Not only is this a monumental moment for the trans community, but it is also great to see how progressive and inclusive the Grammys have become to artists around the world.
Song of the year was won by artist Bonnie Raitt for her song “Just Like That.” She won against artists Taylor Swift, Adele, Harry Styles, Beyonce, and Kendrick Lamar. Her win in this category has caused major controversy among fans on social media, claiming that the artists competing against her for the title said Raitt didn’t deserve the Grammy for song of the year.
However, lots of speculators online don’t understand the origin of her song. Raitt’s inspiration came from a broadcasted news story about a woman donating her son’s heart after his death and about to meet the organ’s recipient. The song has a lot of in-depth meaning compared to the songs placed against hers. Although the other nominees are very talented, Raitt deserved to win this award. Viewers usually expect and want the most popular song to win this category, but we really should be accepting other, less well known artists as well, rather than just the mainstream artists.
With all the great albums that were released in 2022, the artists who were nominated to win album of the year were Harry Styles, ABBA, Adele, Coldplay, Bad Bunny, Beyonce, Brandi Carlile, and Mary J. Blige. The winner for album of the year was Harry Styles, former One-Direction member, for his album “Harry’s House.”
Lots of fans were happy with Styles’ win, as his third major album has had major success. He deserved the award, as he’s been touring, “Love on Tour,” without a break and the amount of work he’s put into “Harry’s House” is like no other. The other artists nominated are great artists who produced fantastic albums, however, none compare to this album.
Another win to reflect upon from the Grammys is a very well known award, being best music video. Nominated for this award were artists Adele, Harry Styles, Doja Cat, Taylor Swift, BTS, and Kendrick Lamar. Taylor Swift won this Grammy for her heartbreaking and beautifully created, “All Too Well: The Short Film,” music video. The video starred actors Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien, and was directed by Swift herself.
Swift has so far re-recorded two of her albums in order to regain credit for her work, as her previous albums were sold without her consent and are now owned by a record label. “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)” had seven minutes added onto the song and turned into a music video. It was an iconic and successful moment for Swift.
This year, the Grammy Awards were the most entertaining to watch compared to years prior, as awards were presented to more groups of people than they ever were before. Watching the progressive and inclusive motions of the Grammys this year held a great impact on all those watching at home and was wonderful for the artists.
