Homecoming is the most overrated school event to take place. From the uncomfortable weather to the odd sights, there is simply no good reason to attend homecoming.
Spending time with friends at homecoming is nice, however, everyone is usually outside in the typical Florida humidity and heat. Everyone is mashed together around the DJ into a blob that smells like sweat and BO, and while it was enjoyable at the time, looking back on it brings only bad vibes.
When I had gone myself, the air was damp because it had just rained and everyone was gross and hot. Being forced to breathe in all that B.O. is simply not worth it in the grand scope of things.
Girls were “dancing” on guys and dudes were “dancing” on girls. The way people were so committed to dancing provocatively was simply weird to see at a school dance.
The DJ was a little lackluster. The music was great, but the problem was from a more technical standpoint. He had trouble transitioning from song to song and it was very noticeable with the people who were in the “mosh pit.”
He switched between songs that did not have the same beats per minute (BPM), and it would mess up the flow. Additionally, the songs were not in the same key, so most transitions were not particularly pleasing to listen to.
As soon as he started transitioning from one song to the next, everyone would stop dancing and the energy would take a huge nosedive.
It would take a solid second for everyone to know what song was next and to start dancing again. As a DJ it’s your job to keep the energy up, however, he did not do that at all.
The DJ didn’t have enough material either, having to replay his set towards the end of the night. I vividly remember even my friends who enjoyed homecoming at the time had complained about the DJ as well.
To give the guy some props, although it looked like he didn’t want to be there, he played some great music, mainly Hispanic and rap music.
Another downside of homecoming was that almost everyone got sick because of homecoming. On Instagram, everyone was talking about how they were feeling sick the very next morning. Who knew a school dance party could turn into a superspreader event? It was flu season as well.
It was fun at the moment but personally not worth it. Other people had fun and that’s great, which is why these events should be held.
During that time the hefty price of homecoming seemed too much for such an event, but it is going somewhere good. The money is used to help fund other school events as well, such as the senior picnic.
At the end of the day, Mrs. Soto and everyone in SGA organizing the event put a lot of effort into setting up these events for students to enjoy, even if it was not totally enjoyable for some people.
