Bringing nothing but greatness, Cape Coral High School’s swim team has remained undefeated in the conference in the past 10 years.
Cape High’s swim team alone has a strong history of dedication, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence. “I’ve been swimming for almost 9 years. I decided to join the highschool team my first year because they truly symbolized how a team can be more like family,” said Senior, Alexa Ferro.
The team practices on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday mornings from 4:45 am to 6:30 am and every weekday afternoon from 2:15-4:30 pm. “I was one of the state swimmers since my sophomore year. I’ve been swimming for 13 years,” stated girl’s swim team captain and senior Emma Best. “When I came here I knew swimming was something that I wanted to do in high school. It’s a lot of training but it’s really worth it in the end.”
Coach Kimble, coach Tedhams, and diving coach Reynolds have all made a huge impact on a young and talented swim team. “Every year has been such a blessing,” said Kimble. “I have so many wonderful experiences and moments that each year is better than the last. They are constantly surprising us with their dedication, heart, and Seahawk Spirit.”
Hoping to see future growth, the team is looking to add more divers since they only have two boy divers and one girl diver. The team consists mainly of juniors and seniors, so they are hoping to get an addition of more underclassmen.
The team thrives off of their great teamwork and kind hearts. “I bring a lot of energy and school spirit,” said junior Jenai Morris. “I cheer a lot and make all my fellow swimmers feel welcome because I remember being so awkward when I first started. I just want all my teammates to know if you suck at swimming, or even if you’re the greatest, we treat everyone the same with no hate for how fast or slow that you go and nobody is a burden.”
Morris’s experience when starting has allowed her to empathize with her newer teammates. “I used to get made fun of before I went on the team because I couldn’t swim, so I wanted to show them that your girl can swim now and she’s better than you.”
Emma Best may actually be the best, being Cape High’s athlete of the week for the week of August 26th 2024 placing first place on her 100 fly, and 100 breaststroke. “my favorite part of being on the swim team is the constant group activities where you get to bond with one another”, said Sophomore Nolan Best. “My sister Emma stands out to me the most, she’s one of the fastest swimmers on the team.” Overall the swim team is a team that feels like family among the members while also making blood family bonds stronger.
Swimming is an effective activity when it comes to being fit. Fitness can play a key role in staying healthy and active. “Swimming’s a good way to stay fit, the coaches dedicate themselves to the team and the players,” It’s a good feeling knowing that swimming and the practices is teaching me to apply myself better and learn how to do a lot of stuff not a lot of people can do,” stated boys team captain and senior Jaidon Albers.
Admission is free to swim meets so set that alarm and come on out to cheer the team on. Morris added, “Even though you’re kind of tired, you just want to put your best foot forward, and when you’re swimming with all your friends and the people who you like to be around. It’s just a bunch of positive energy to end your day. So even if you have a bad school day the swim practices make it better.”
