Socksgiving is a collection of socks that the Interact club collects for veterans during the months of October and November. IB Junior and Co-President of the Interact Club, Desirae Moe, stated, “We are collecting clean socks to donate to the Hearts and Homes for Veterans organization.”
The other Co-President of the Interact Club, Andrew Alexandre added, “Socksgiving will directly benefit retired veterans from the military who have provided service, but currently are financially struggling at the moment.”
Hearts and Homes for Veterans is a local, nonprofit organization in Fort Myers that helps support and raise donations for homeless veterans. “If you are a homeless veteran, warm feet make a big difference, and comfortable feet make a big difference,” said the sponsor of the Interact Club, Jessica Recupito.
As the months of the year in Florida have been getting cooler, the veterans can benefit from having more clothing. Alexandre stated, “We will provide them with clothing in the form of socks to help keep them warm and comfortable in the coming colder months,”.
Socksgiving has been an annual community service event that Interact Club has participated in. “This has been a tradition with the Seahawks helping out our veterans in this kind of way,” stated Recupito.
Moe also added, “Interact Club has done Socktober or Socksgiving since before I was even a freshman here but we have also continued to do it during my three years here.”
Sockgiving was previously known as Socktober, but the name of the donation was changed due to inconvenient weather. Recupito said, “It was Socktober but after having 3 hurricanes in a row it interrupted it and we decided to carry out Socktober into the month of November hoping it would be more successful,”.
The Interact Club is getting ready for Socksgiving by advertising and making the school aware of the donations needed. “We are going to advertise Socksgiving by putting posters around the school and getting an article in the newspaper to make people aware of the donation taking place,” stated Moe.
The Interact Club could use everyone’s help in this donation for veterans. “We would appreciate it if everyone or close to everyone could contribute to the donation of socks for veterans,” said Moe. “We are going to be partnering with the National Honor Society to help spread the word about Socksgiving.”
There are plenty of places to drop off your donation in school and get it to veterans in need. There will be a drop off box by the front office kiosk, a donation box in Recupito’s room 145, and also a donation box in Dawn Engh’s room, 113. This event will be going on from October 20th to November 21st.
