The Lady Seahawks, Cape High’s soccer team, has won 3 games, tied 2, and lost 3 so far. Their schedule includes around 27 games this season, with 2-3 games a week. As their season kicks off, their goals and hopes for the season are made evident to all bystanders that witness the incredible progress they’re making to beat last year’s record. They finished off the 2024-2025 season with ten wins, 12 ties, and only three losses.
Mia Jackson, one of the captains and starting midfielder, has been on varsity for 3 years. As she starts her junior season she says that she is “looking forward to growing the team as a whole. Last year we kind of struggled with sportsmanship and keeping it together, so I think this year will be a solid year for us since we have a lot of new freshmen coming in.”
This year, the team is putting a main focus on fitness. “We started the summer off with 2-3 workouts a week. Mr. [Nicholas] Massielo, the cross country coach, is our conditioning coach. We are working and getting our midfielders, defenders, and forwards in shape and in great condition for the season,” explained Jackson
As a captain, she hopes to bring the team closer. She plans on putting more of an emphasis on this by bringing back team dinners and activities.
”We did a lot of team bonding my freshmen year and I think it’s important to keep that going, it can make the freshmen feel more welcomed and help us grow as a team.”
Ella Mayes, freshman on the team, said, “I’m excited for this season as it’s my first high school season of soccer. I’m very excited to see what I can accomplish and also excited to be a starter.”
Her biggest hope is to come into high school with a strong first season. ”My main goal this season is to make more than one goal. I’m working on endurance and speed training as of right now to get to where I wanna be, it will take a lot of time but I’m prepared to put in the effort it takes.”
Laura Gross, sophomore, said that she is, “looking forward to being with my friends and having fun this season, also I’m hoping for a more positive season.”
The Lady Seahawks have a less vigorous schedule compared to last year, when they were plagued by injuries from four games a week. The reduced amount of stress on the girls is already showing in their performance.
Gross is looking to make great improvements and expand on her previous season. “Last year, I had low confidence and always thought that I wasn’t doing my best. My goal this year is to work on confidence and play my emotions better.”
As a team, Gross said that they are, “working on getting goals in the back of the net, since we have a lot of incoming freshmen we are making sure we also work on communication and our chemistry as a team.”
