School, work, clubs, church, junior class president, Aeris Romero does it all.
Romero started in the Student Government Association (SGA) her freshman year and was set on it ever since. With her drive and determination Romero knew she was the perfect fit for SGA. However with this responsibility, she embodies her relationship with Christ in everything that she accomplishes along the way.
“As a Christian that’s in high school, I try to use my faith to help me be kinder to people because high school can be hard at times with all the drama that happens. However, I try to be a good influence on my peers,” explained Romero.
Romero’s relationship with God started at 14 years old and it has continued to shine through her ever since as she has been going to church on the weekends, youth group on Wednesdays, and having independent bible studies. Those are her time to reflect on what she strides for in herself, others, and most importantly God.
With that being said, Romero knew she wanted to make a bigger difference in her school community, and decided to run for Communications Director her sophomore year and won.
Entering junior year, Romero decided to run for junior class president, and ultimately became victorious. Part of this role is to plan prom, the ultimate night for upperclassmen.
Romero is responsible for organizing a venue to rent, assisting in picking the theme, and coordinating with her officers to ensure prom will be a night to remember.
Romero shared “I had full confidence in my ability to plan prom and it was my initial reason for running to be class president. I loved the excitement and anticipation that came with planning the event.”
Photography is Romero’s way of expressing herself, capturing the moments that can’t necessarily be put into words. Romero received a Canon R100 as a Christmas gift sophomore year from her mother, Patty Bernal.
Since then, Romero has taken her talent in photography and joined the Seahawk’s Eye as visual editor her sophomore year and has photographed sporting events, photos for articles, and more. Capturing moments like that grants everyone the opportunity to look back on them, and that’s always been something Romero wanted to create for her peers.
However, the friendships Romero has made along the way have been a great support system in her high school years, as she has grown lifelong friendships.
Romero met Ana Luiza Guimarães at Caloosa middle school, and since then their friendship has grown tremendously. Both Romero and Guimaraes have shared moments together and helped each other grow. “I’ve seen Aeris in most stages of her life and now as we have gotten older we both have grown in the way that we act and how we present ourselves,” explained Guimarães.
Romero looks back on all the moments she has shared with Guimarães, and her other close friends as she will remember them for a lifetime.
Romero believes “High school is the time to create life long friendships and to hopefully build a future with them in it. I want to be able to tell my future kids all of the crazy things we did in high school with these people present in my life.”
Antonella Martin is another person that played a significant role in Romero’s life as she shared “We became friends in middle school and ever since then we have been inseparable. I will always look back on the moments we shared from back then to how much we have grown as individuals and I’ll forever be grateful to have Aeris in my life,”
Friends are clearly important to Romero, but where and how she grew up is really the thing that shaped who she is today. Romero grew up in Miami however, with her parents being split she was jumping between Kendall and Homestead.
With Romero’s Father not being very present in her life, the relationship between Romero and Bernal grew stronger than ever she stated “My mom is my greatest motivation when it comes to going after dreams for my future. Because of her sacrifices, I get to accomplish everything she never got the chance to and with her unwavering support, I’m making it all come to fruition. She showed me I never needed the world’s approval of me, just God in my heart.”
Ever since Romero was just a little baby to her now about to graduate high school and proceed with her educational prowess in college, Bernal has been there. Bernal expressed “I’m most proud of Aeris for her constant perseverance. Even in the hardest and darkest of times, my daughter has managed to see her way through opposition and hurdles in her life.”
Romero is going to be the first person in her family to graduate high school, and soon go to college, and Bernal is more than proud “She persevered through tough times and still managed to get a full ride scholarship, which was something I was never able to do, so I’m very proud of her for that.”
Romero is planning on majoring in marketing when she goes to college, and that will be the foundation for the rest of her life, and Bernal is going to be there every step of the way. Bernal feels that “Aeris was always destined for bigger things that she can even imagine and I look forward to seeing that growth over the years. I can’t wait to see what God has planned for her life and whatever it is I know she will handle it with grace,”
All in All, Romero has her whole life ahead of her, and with her now being so involved in her academics, extracurriculars, and family there is no doubt about the fact that she is going to flourish.
