The Conjuring franchise has gone on long enough, and quite frankly is not even that good. The Conjuring movies are all basically the same story line, every time a different issue that Ed and Lorraine Warren are called to fix.
These movies were based on allegedly “true” stories but, obviously have been exaggerated for the sake of views. Yet, they still don’t compare to other horror movies like “The Shining” or “Texas Chain Saw Massacre.”
This franchise is predictable, you don’t even have to watch any of the movies to the end to know what’s going to happen.
Each movie starts with a family being haunted by a ghost and then some comical jump scares. It always ends with Ed and Lorraine Warren acting like ghost busters to save the day.
Not only that, we see no character development with the tormented families. For example, in Conjuring 2, there are several family members but they become victims and the viewers don’t even get to know them.
This causes their responses to feel more robotic than emotional. With weak character development it becomes harder to empathize or be scared when you don’t feel invested in the characters.
Across the board, the jumpscares are not even that scary. The movies practically give it away by the eerie music and a long dark hallway, it’s too predictable and takes the enjoyment out of being jumpscared.
These movies are also insanely long, the majority of time allocated to background information that nobody cares about. For example, in “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” there’s a dragged on portion of the movie leading up to the demonic involvement and it is so unnecessary.
Same thing in “Last Rites,” the newest movie, the plot takes over half of the movie to unite the Warrens and the Haunted family. It’s understandable to have backstory but there should be no reason it’s dragged on for so long, it’s boring.
The items being possessed and haunted are basic as well. A doll, how creative. Not only was the Anabelle doll the star of the first movie, there were three whole spin off movies about the Anabelle doll. How many ideas can one possibly have for a possessed doll?
In “Last Rites,” it was the Mirror that ended up being possessed by a demon. Not only was the Mirror possessed, so was Lorraine’s unborn daughter when the Warrens first encountered the mirror several years ago.
It’s not surprising that it doesn’t make sense seeing as the whole franchise makes absolutely no sense to begin with. If these movies were truly based on real stories, they would make sense, but they just don’t.
Not only do the movies suck, but the promotion for the newest movie, “The Conjuring: Last Rites” was overly exaggerated. There were literal priests blessing viewers with holy water outside of the theaters making the movie seem extra scary. There was maybe an hour in total of the actual ‘horror’ aspect of the movie.
Overall this whole franchise is overrated and there really shouldn’t be any more movies. There are hundreds of other horror movies out there that will give you a great scare, and The Conjuring franchise is definitely not part of that.
