Every weekday, the majority of students wake up before the sun even starts to rise to be on time to school. Many teenagers struggle to pay attention, and stay awake in class because their bodies are not naturally made to wake up that early. Schools should start later as it would help improve students’ academic performance, and overall well being.
Teenagers tend to have different sleep patterns than adults and young children. According to research, teens’ bodies naturally fall asleep later at night but they still need 8 to 10 hours to function properly throughout the day. When school starts super early, students are forced to wake up before achieving the recommended amount of sleep.
As a result of waking up teenagers’ bodies forcefully, students go throughout the day feeling exhausted and unmotivated. It can become harder to pay attention in class, complete assignments, or participate in simple activities. If school started later, it would allow students to come to class feeling alert, and prepared.
Not getting enough sleep can also affect students’ mental health. When teenagers don’t get enough sleep, it can cause mood swings, spikes in cortisol and anxiety. Over time, this can lead to physical health problems and mental health issues.
Students who get a good night’s sleep most nights seem to perform better academically. When the brain gets enough rest, it will perform at a higher excellence. This means that students are more likely to understand the knowledge they are being taught.
Schools that have already switched their start times later have already seen significant results. They have seen less absences, and less students coming late to class. Teachers also noticed that students are more engaged and interested in the lesson.Â
Another benefit of school times getting pushed until later is the safety improving. When schools start super early, students are forced to drive while feeling sleep deprived. With school times starting later, it can help students feel more comfortable when driving to school.
Some people would argue that changing school times to later would interfere with after school activities like sports, jobs, and clubs that take place after school. These are crucial activities for students to get involved and shouldn’t miss.
Education should be designed to help students succeed both personally, and academically. If students feel that they are excessively tired, they can reach their highest potential.Â
Later start times for school is a simple change that can benefit students drastically. By letting students get the amount of sleep necessary, schools could have a safer, and more productive learning environment.Â
